Pheasant Coucal (Centropus phasianinus) in Great Bowerbird bower Cooinda Kakadu NP NT
Canon EOS 40D Lens 100-400mm L IS USM at 210 mm ISO 640 F5.0 1/160 fill flash 31 August 2009

At Cooinda accommodation area in Kakadu NP I found an active bower of the Great Bowerbird (Ptilonorhynchus nuchalis) immediately alongside a car access track . This enabled ready use of the car as a hide with the added bonus that would avoid curious humans. However one disadvantage was the car was in full sun so I had a free dry sauna !!! I had just witnessed the male Great Bowerbird displaying and then mating with a female that came to the bower as a result of the display. Often I see quite a few other species at bowers but all of a sudden  this Pheasant Coucal appeared in the bower from the other end of the bower!! It will be interesting to see if others have an explanation for this behaviour ?? After a few moments occupying the bower the bird strolled out the front and quitely stalked away !!
